Small changes always add up -- and the same holds true when you cut calories. Shaving off a few calories here and there can bring foods most diabetics consider off-limits back within reach. Small changes are usually more manageable and easier to live with; drastic changes on the other hand, even if they produce good outcomes at first, rarely end up being realistic for most people to stick with.

Here are a few tips for shaving off a few calories while saving taste:

  • Lighten up your coffee and tea by using non-fat half & half. It adds a creamier flavor than low-fat milk and has half the calories of regular coffee creamer.
  • Trim all fat from your beef, pork and chicken. Remove the skin from poultry. And after you drain the fat off of your cooked ground meat, place it in a strainer and run water over it - this tip eliminates some residual fat.
  • Try one of the new dessert-flavored yogurts instead of ice cream. The tangy taste of yogurt is similar to that of cheesecake, and there are an abundance of flavor options available.
  • Eat your dinner on salad plates and your cereal out of tea cups to help you eat less. Your plate won't look empty, and this will help you a great deal with portion control.
  • If you're going out to eat, then plan to leave some food on your plate or split a plate with a friend. You can even ask that half of your meal be boxed up before it is delivered to the table. Portion sizes at restaurants tend to be too large, especially for diabetics. This tip will keep you from accidentally overdoing it.
