Pre-diabetes Can Be Reversed

Sunday November 25, 2007

Pre-diabetes is diagnosed if a fasting blood glucose level is between 100 mg/dl and 125 mg/dl. Usually it is discovered during routine lab tests as part of a yearly physical.

People with pre-diabetes usually go on to develop type 2 diabetes. But it is possible to reverse pre-diabetes and prevent a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes later on.

How can pre-diabetes be reversed?

  • Eat a healthy diet and include more vegetables, fruit and fiber and less processed and fatty foods.
  • Pay attention to portion sizes and calories to help with weight loss.
  • Increase daily activity and shoot for 30 minutes of exercise at least 5 times a week.
  • Aim to keep blood pressure and cholesterol within a normal range and take medications for these, if prescribed.
