Last week, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that Avandia (rosiglitazone) may possibly lead to heart attacks and even death from cardiovascular causes. This has understandably caused a lot of concern for people with type 2 diabetes who may have been taking Avandia.
In the Diabetes Forum, several members who have type 2 diabetes, have posted about their experiences with Avandia (rosiglitazone). Many have had side effects of fluid retention (edema) requiring a change in their medication. Others have commented that they have taken Avandia with no problems and that it works well in managing their diabetes.
Are you someone with type 2 diabetes? Have you taken Avandia? Take the poll on the right and compare your experience with others who have taken rosiglitazone.
The FDA maintains that there is conflicting evidence on the safety of rosiglitazone at this time and they have posted an information website on rosiglitazone to help people access the latest information about the drug.

Avandia works, but the side effects were severe. Inaddition to gaining 8 lbs. in 10 days, I had really bad mood swings, and the weight gain did not help. I was in a panic, but had to go off of it. Now I find I do OK with Glucophge/Metformin. The trick is to take the Glucophage early in the morning, an hour or more before you eat.
i was on avandia and my ankles and knees swelled so bad. dr was not concerned about it. I was feeling bad and my family doctor said he thought I has cronic heart failure. I told him he had a cronic brain fart and took myself off the medicine. I was walking with a walker, crying in agony with the pain at night after I went to bed. finally after 4 mths, I do not use my walker, still painful in legs but nothing like when I was on medicine. I had gained 40 lbs, had something with my liver which is fine now. I was told by my diabetic doctor, he only had 2 patients out of hundreds that had trouble and I retorterd with lucky me, #3. my friend was on it and had 2 heart attacks and now I talked her int getting off it. also one other friend was having trouble and after 3-4 mths, both are feeling soooo much better. thediabetic sites have surely saved my life and I can never thank them enough.

I took avandia for number of years, I had edema in my ankles, edema in my knees causing severe pain and inabilty to walk long periods of time, I have chrohns, took lasix to get the water out since no one had a clue it was the avandia, not even myself, had several instances of renal failure and low blood pressure causing frequent blackouts, yes I think the worse was over at a time when I discontinued the avandia, and now take Glybituride and metformin with no side effects
