The Lancet Takes a Balanced View of Rosiglitazone Study
The online journal, The Lancet, published an editorial, May 23rd, 2007, on the current controversary surrounding the diabetes drug rosiglitazone (Avandia). The Lancet, established in 1823 in the UK, is a well-known authoritative medical journal. The editorial extends a voice of reason into the the fray concerning the recent study, published May 21, 2007, in the New England Journal of Medicine, which found an increase in heart attacks and other fatal cardiovascular conditions that appear to be caused by rosiglitazone.
The Lancet editorial recommends a "balanced" approach to the rosiglitazone study and states that although the findings do indicate that there is a need for concern, there were some "important weaknesses" in the study that need further investigation.
