Diabetes can affect the kidneys. And the kidneys filter blood and help your body excrete toxins. But when you have diabetes, high blood sugar levels can damage the delicate structure of the kidneys. Over time, they can become less able to filter properly.

Kidney damage associated with diabetes is called nephropathy. The damage is progressive and can eventually result in kidney failure. If you have high blood pressure too, the damage can progress even more quickly.

How can you keep your kidneys healthy?

  • The number one way to prevent kidney damage is to keep blood sugar levels and blood pressure as close to normal as possible.
  • Don't smoke
  • Get your protein level checked every year at your annual physical.
  • Keep your weight in a healthy range.
  • Limit alcohol intake.
  • Make sure to get regular exercise.
  • Watch salt intake.
  • Watch your protein intake if necessary.
  • Take your blood pressure and diabetes medications as prescribed.
