Welcome to the sixth chapter of our series, Jim's Journey. Jim was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in August of 2007. In fall 2008, Jim was dealing with a fractured ankle. How did this injury affect him, overall?

Jim's October/November 2008 Stats

  • Height: 5 feet 8 inches
  • Weight: 224 lbs.
  • BMI: 33.5 (obese)
  • Smoking Status: 3 packs a day
  • Medication: Metformin 1,000 mg. twice a day and Lisinopril 5 mg. once a day
  • Current A1c: 6.3
  • Current Fasting Blood Glucose: 110 to 120
  • Current Average Blood Pressure: 120/80

Jim's Weight:

Jim's had a minor setback, gaining 4 pounds while he was off work because of his ankle injury. But, as Jim explains, the potential for a bigger weight gain was there. Knowing that his injury would leave him inactive for a while, he was extra vigilant about portion sizes and calorie counting. He feels that 4 pounds is not a huge deal, and that it will be easily dealt with once he is able to be active again.

Exercise:

Jim has tried all different kinds of exercise over the last six months, from exercise classes to expensive workout programs and a personal trainer. Fracturing his ankle forced him to stop his training sessions, but he hasn't been back to the trainer since his ankle is on the mend.

While Jim was off work with his ankle, he visited a nearby U.S. Air Force reserve base. He found out that, as a U.S. Air Force veteran, he has permission to use the base gym and racquetball courts. Jim feels that this might be the solution to his exercise dilemma. He enjoys being on the base, and the prospect of combining exercise with the camaraderie of other vets might help him stick to regular exercise.

No matter how many times Jim changes his approach to regular exercise, the important thing is that he keeps trying to find the type of exercise that is right for him. With that kind of positive attitude, he is likely to succeed in making exercise a part of his daily life.

Nutrition:

Jim still likes his cola, and although he is trying to cut down, he usually has at least one glass a day. Jim acknowledges that water would be a better choice, but at the moment he's trying to substitute powdered sugar-free drink mixes added to his water for some of the soda that he drinks. Anything that cuts down his consumption of soda pop will help overall.

A1c:

Jim's A1c continues to drop, with 6.3 being the latest result. He says that changing his eating habits is helping to keep his blood glucose levels consistently lower. He has cut down on portion sizes and tries to eat more lean protein. He is trying to limit his cravings for sweets and doughnuts, substituting fresh fruit and yogurt for his snacks.

Jim also has improved by making sure to take his evening dose of metformin most of the time. The evening dose has always been a challenge for Jim to remember because he works second shift. He is finding that he is getting more in the habit of remembering to take the metformin at the right times.

The Smoking:

Jim has been struggling more lately with smoking. He is still smoking 3 packs a day. He admits that being off from work didn't help. Jim is usually very active tending to projects around the house and maintaining his fish pond. Having to sit while his ankle mended was hard on him. Unfortunately, this led him to think about smoking more. Now that he is back to work and can get around better, he is more motivated to cut back on smoking.
