Definition: Thiazolidinediones are oral medications that help lower blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. They help lower insulin resistance in cells, improving the way that the body responds to insulin. Thiazolidinediones are typically taken by mouth once or twice daily. They may be used alone, with other pills or with insulin. Actos and Avandia are the two brand name thiazolidinediones that are on the market today.
