Definition: Preprandial literally means "before a meal." For people with diabetes, it refers to blood glucose measurements taken before a meal. This is known as the preprandial blood glucose level. It is also known as the fasting blood glucose level. Keeping a record of preprandial blood sugars helps to track the effectiveness of prescribed diabetes medications and/or insulin regimen. Preprandial numbers that are within an acceptable range (90-130 mg/dl) suggest that the treaments are effective.
Examples: Keeping preprandial or fasting blood glucose levels close to normal often can determine a good A1c outcome.
