Definition: Acanthosis nigricans is a skin condition that occurs most often in obese people or people who have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. It affects the skin in the body folds and creases, usually in armpits, groin and neck, causing it to become dark and thick with a velvety appearance.

There is no treatment for acanthosis nigricans, but once the underlying cause is treated, it may fade with time.
