Pfizer Inc. has announced that it will discontinue manufacturing Exubera, an inhaled form of insulin. A press release that is posted on the Exubera website states that the decision to stop making Exubera had nothing to do with the safety of the drug. There simply are not enough people who take Exubera, to justify the expense of making the drug.

Doctors are being encouraged to begin moving their patients on to other high blood sugar-controlling medications. Exubera will no longer be available as of January 16, 2008.
