The focus of Halloween is often on trick-or-treating and sweets, but it is possible to have a healthy Halloween celebration. Especially when you have type 2 diabetes, it is good to try to give your Halloween plans a healthy twist. Here are some healthy Halloween celebration ideas that do not involve candy:

  • host a dress-up party
  • carve pumpkins
  • visit a farm that has apple picking, hayrides, or a corn maze
  • For trick-or-treat: offer stickers, pencils, plastic rings, or mini play-doh containers -- this way you won't end up with all the leftover candy.

If you do end up with candy on hand, try working it into your meal plan by having one piece with your meal and in place of a dessert. Exercise portion control with your candy just like you do with your other foods. If you don't think you can, then try not to have it in your home at all. Or, keep just a handful and give the rest away.
