I just got my flu shot. It was cheap and painless. Well, it seemed cheap since I have health insurance. However to people with diabetes who are uninsured, that $30 might seem no different than a million dollars.
CVS Caremark Minute Clinic and California-based nonprofit Direct Relief are partnering to offer $5 million in free flu shots to uninsured patients beginning September 20.
The American Diabetes Association generally recommends that every person with diabetes get a flu shot every year. The Centers for Disease Control states "If you Have diabetes, a flu shot could save your life." From my own personal experience, I haven't been sick as often since I've started getting a regular flu shot.
The flu shot doesn't guarantee you will never get sick, but it will make it harder for you to catch it. If you haven't had a flu shot, talk to your doctor about it. Not everybody can have one, so make sure it's recommended for you.
Starting September 20, vouchers will be issued to participating clinics and health centers to be given to existing uninsured patients and redeemable at CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic. Names and locations of clinics and health centers will be announced that day.
According to the CVS website, they are currently offering a free flu shot if you spend $30 on select products.
Walgreens will be distributing $1 million in vouchers via their Wellness Tour buses and through community events in collaboration with local departments of health.

How sad. Considering that the flu shot this year is a “combination” shot including the the H1N1 vaccine that most of Europe has abandoned, this strategy does NOT serve the public.

Wow guys. A large flu shot mobilization plus public awareness campaign is made in 2009, and the resulting massive public vaccinations result in a lower than expected flu outbreak? What a surprising turn of events!
