Check out the Carbs in your Fruit

Wednesday November 12, 2008
Managing type 2 diabetes means making healthy food choices. Lean meats, whole grains, vegetables and fruits, are all part of a healthy diet, but when you have diabetes, eating a lot of carbohydrates can affect your blood glucose levels. Usually foods with a high sugar or starch content are higher in carbs. Most kinds of fruit have natural sugar in them and contribute carbohydrates to your meals, but not all fruits are created equal. Some fruits have more grams of carbs than others. Have you ever wondered how many grams of carbs are in the fruits you eat?

About.com's online nutritional website, Calorie Count.com can help you figure out the carbs in all kinds of foods. I used Calorie Count to find out how many carbs are in many different fruits. An apple can have as many as 30 grams of carbs, while a cup of strawberries can have 11 grams.

I was recently diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. I had been taking Seroquel for 2 1/2 years. I was taking a low dose, however, since I quit taking it in July my blood sugar has slowly started going down. I have not changed my eating habits, because they were not bad to begin with. After stopping the seroquel I dropped 20lbs almost immediately. I have concerns that mine at this point is not genetic and more to do with the medication, even though diabetes runs in my family. I have watched my diet for many years just because of that.
So, my question is, could mine be from the medication and not genetics?

Don’t forget that although the carb content is different, the effects of the carbs might be different, too. For example, a lot of diabetics find that watermelon spikes the blood sugar in a major way but it has a very mild effect on my blood sugar. Let me eat five grapes, though! Every body is different. Literally.
