Want to Reduce Your Risk of Vascular Disease? Eat Your Broccoli

Sunday August 10, 2008

Researchers at Warwick University, located in th UK, have found that a compound in broccoli, called sulforaphane, reverses the damage to blood vessels that hyperglycemia can cause.

Sulforaphane reduces the molecules that can damage human cells. It also activates a protective protein which can block destructive processes that can lead to the development of vascular disease in diabetes.

Broccoli is only one of many vegetables in the Brassica family. Cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts are also related to broccoli and also contain sulforaphanes.

It would seem reasonable that increasing consumption of broccoli and other Brassica vegetables will help reduce or prevent the risk of vascular damage in diabetes.
