Does Metabolic Syndrome Even Exist?

Sunday June 8, 2008

If a tree falls in the forest and there's no one there to hear it, did it really make a sound? That's a philosophical debate, to be sure. Well it seems that now there is a debate going on in the medical community about whether metabolic syndrome exists.

Metabolic syndrome is a collection of risk factors that can eventually lead to cardiovascular disease and/or type 2 diabetes.

According to an article by About.com's guide to heart disease, Dr. Rich Fogoros, the American Diabetes Association has taken the position that metabolic syndrome doesn't exist, while the American Heart Association still supports the diagnosis and offers a wealth of information about metabolic syndrome on it's website.

Well, which is it? Does it exist or doesn't it?
