Fingertips are More Accurate for Glucose Testing

The June issue of the FDA's online newsletter, Patient Safety News, offers advice about using blood glucose meters safely and correctly.

The article mentions that blood glucose levels measured from sites other than fingertips may not be as accurate, because other sites, such as forearms, upper arms, thighs or the base of your thumb, may not register rapidly changing glucose levels as quickly as fingertips do.

The FDA recommends using the fingertips when testing during those times when blood glucose may be changing quickly, like during exercise, or after a meal, after an insulin injection, or during illness or periods of stress.
