ADA Revises Viewpoint on Low Carb Diets for 2008

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has issued the 2008 Clinical Practice Recommendations this month. Of special interest to many people with diabetes is the new Nutrition Recommendations and Interventions for Diabetes.
The ADA has changed it's viewpoint on low carb diets. They concede that "low carbohydrate diets might seem to be a logical approach to lowering postprandial glucose".
They also advise that both low carb and low fat diets may be effective in the short term (up to one year). This is a change from last years' statement that low carb diets were not recommended in the management of diabetes.

It looks like the ADA is finally starting to get it.
It is about time.
They still will only endorse low-carb for short-term because there are not yet a hundred studies “proving” its safety, but there are plenty of people who have been doing it for years with only positive results. It is not an unbalanced lose-weight quick plan, but produces safe and long-term control of diabetes, overweight and cholesterol. And yes, it is easy to stay with and pleasureable. I have done low-carb since 2000 and no ill effects, blood work is still top-notch, and nothing but good to say about it. I enjoy the finest foods and vegetables.
Eating lots of sugar, flour and starch and fearing all fat is unbalanced, unnatural and unhealthy, regardless of what medical “experts” say, not to mention taking lots of expensive pharma drugs to counteract all the runaway symptoms of metabolic syndrome. There is no need, and there is a ready, free solution: low-carb. The medics and pharma companies are just trying to salvage their dubious reputations and line their pockets by keeping you sick and dependent on them. Don’t listen to Big Brother’s fearmongering, but boycott him instead. Take back control of your health for free.
As if this is news to those of of who are living with diabetes every day!? I’m still in shock over the “within the guidlines” diabetic meal I was served in the hospital after delivering my son– mac and cheese, a side of mashed potatoes, a roll and a tiny side salad wiht LO FAT dressing. Pudding for dessert! WOW! Let’s get it straight!
