Planning Meals in Advance Can Put You in Control

Monday December 3, 2007

When you are diagnosed with diabetes, there are a lot of major changes that you have to make to your daily life. Like what you eat, for example. How much you eat, what you eat and when you eat directly affects your blood sugar. Eating, one of the most basic pleasures of life, all of a sudden isn't so enjoyable anymore.

Having a meal plan can help. It can provide good guidelines for good choices. If you eat the same recommended number of carbs each day. your blood sugar is more likely to stay at a good level and not go up and down erratically. If you are on insulin, being consistent also helps you figure out how much insulin you need.

Benefits of a meal plan:

  • Better blood sugar control
  • Balanced meals with more of what your body needs
  • Weight control
  • Reduced risk of complications later
  • The feeling that you are in control of your diabetes, instead of the other way around.
