What Makes Morning Blood Sugars High? It's the Inside Story...

The Diabetes Forum is the place to go for discussions on anything and everything about diabetes. This week's hot topic... why are first morning blood glucose readings high some days and not others? What have you found that makes your blood sugars higher in the morning. A forum member since September of 2006, Zpxykm wonders why his AM blood sugars vary erratically, in a post labeled "Are There Unknown Factors?".

Zpxykm asks, Hello, all. As I told before, I am a pre-diabetes of type 2. And the peculiarity of my symptom is that BG is normal except the morning FPG around 130. I have tried decreasing it by diet and exercise and so, with the "same" diet and exercises, at times it can be very good, but at times bad. Are there other factors that affect the FPB except the diet, exercise?...read more.

Papitas answers, Well... there is something known as the Dawn Effect whereby blood glucose is sometimes raised in the early morning hours...read more.

and Marcia also answers, you would have to go back to the night before. What did you have for dinner? What time did you have dinner? Did you have a snack afterwards, or maybe dessert later on in the evening? Did you walk or exercise some evenings but not others? Were all the readings taken at the same time of the day?...read more.
