Starting Insulin When You Are Type 2

Sunday November 4, 2007

When someone has type 1 diabetes, there is no question that they will need insulin. Having type 1 means their pancreas can no longer make insulin, and it must be injected to help them survive.

Type 2 diabetes is different. People with type 2 still produce insulin on their own, but their body is resistant to it. Only about one-third of type 2 people are prescribed insulin. How do doctors decide when a person with type 2 should be on insulin? Could earlier insulin treatment help matters in the long run, and perhaps reduce devastating complications? Does the thought of injecting insulin make you nervous?

For the answers to these and other questions about insulin, read more from LifeWire writer, Kelly Close, here...
