New Drug for Type 2 Diabetes Approved in Europe

Wednesday October 3, 2007

According to a press release from Novartis Pharmaceuticals, their new drug Galvus (vildagliptin) has been approved to treat type 2 diabetes in 27 countries in Europe and also Norway and Iceland. Galvus is a DDP-4 inhibitor, the same family as the U.S. approved drug Januvia. Galvus can also be used in combination with metformin, sulfonylureas and thiazolidinediones to more effectively reduce blood glucose levels in people who need better control.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved Galvus for marketing in the U.S. Additional clinical trials are required before the FDA will give the approval.

In clinical trials that have already been completed, common side effects were stuffy nose, headaches, dizziness, and upper respiratory tract infection.

Leave it to the good old FDA to suck the hind T–. Sorta like Resluin and some others.
