The Novo Nordisk Changing Diabetes Bus embarked on it's "round the world" journey to raise awareness about diabetes, on September 14th, 2006 following the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The bus is part of the "Global Drive to Change Diabetes". Diabetes is a world-wide health problem with 246 million people diagnosed. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) predicts 380 million people diagnosed with diabetes by the year 2025.
So far, the bus has made stops in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, South Africa, Australia, China, and Japan. The bus landed on the North American continent on May 17th in British Columbia and will travel across Canada and North America, ending it's 18 month journey in New York City on November 14th, 2007, World Diabetes Day.
According to a press release from Novo Nordisk, "Each corner of the bus features an important theme in the fight against diabetes, and big plasma video screens, computers and the possibility of having a diabetes test or a body mass index (BMI) measurement will keep visitors busy and entertained while they get an overview of the past, present and likely future scenarious of diabetes."
The bus offers something for everyone, from people who would just like to know more about diabetes, to people who have been diagnosed with the disease, to healthcare professionals.
