Recalled Supplement Causes Dangerous Drug Interactions

Saturday March 17, 2007

The FDA has posted a press release from Cosmos Trading Inc. informing the public of a voluntary recall of Rhino Max (Rhino V Max), which has been marketed as a supplement. Rhino Max contains aminotadalafil, which is chemically similar to tadalafil, the active ingredient in the prescription drug, Cialis. Tadalafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.

Rhino Max and Rhino V Max can pose a dangerous health risk to people who also take prescription drugs which contain nitrates. People with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol are frequently on medications that have nitrates as an active ingredient.

According to the press release, "The recalled Rhino Max (Rhino V Max) is sold in 5-tablet boxes or 15-tablet boxes. The product label does not warn consumers with high blood pressure not to ingest the product. Also, it does not state it contains aminotadalafil."

When tadalafil is taken with medications containing nitrates, a dangerous drop in blood pressure can occur. Common prescription drugs that contain nitrates include any drugs that have nitroglycerin as an ingredient, such as patches, tablets, capsules, ointments and sprays. Imdur, Isordil, Iso-bid, and Isosorbide Mononitrate are some other frequently prescribed blood pressure medications containing nitrates.

People who have taken Rhino Max (Rhino V Max) should stop using the supplement immediately. The FDA recommends contacting your physician if you have taken Rhino Max and encountered any health problems which could be associated with using this supplement.
