Halle Berry is Spokeswoman for Diabetes

By January 10, 2007

Follow me on:

Halle Berry won a People's Choice Award on January 9th for "Favorite Female Action Star" in the movie "X-Men, The Last Stand". But did you know that Halle Berry also has Type 1 diabetes? The actress, who turned 40 years old last August, has had diabetes for 19 years. Halle works hard to donate her time to raise money for research for organizations such as the Juvenile Diabetes Association.

In 2004, she became the first national ambassador of the National Diabetes Education - Diabetes Aware Campaign with the support of the Entertainment Industry Foundation and Novo Nordisk. The Diabetes Aware Campaign sponsors a website dedicated to teaching people with diabetes how to effectively manage their disease. It also offers a place for family and friends to go to learn more about diabetes and diabetes management.

Okay, I read in another site that Halle has weaned herself off insulin and now considers herself a Type 2. I don’t think she was Type I at all then because there is no pancreatic activity in a Type I and you at least need a basal insulin to control your blood sugar. Theoretically speaking, I guess, you could never eat a carb again and not need to bolus but that isn’t very realistic.

There’s no way you can be cured of Type 1 and “wean” yourself off insulin. Which means Dawn’s absolutely right. Halle must’ve been Type 2 to begin with and then gone onto insulin. Otherwise it just doesn’t work! Spending all day in the gym doesn’t work either if you want to go off insulin. It only helps control the bsl’s Good luck to Halle if she could reverse her type 2 diabetes though. She looks fantastic. Good onya luv!

A few years ago, Halle Berry came out and stated that she did not have type 1 diabetes, as first thought. She now says that she has type 2 diabetes. That is not the usual progression of diabetes, but it is what has happened to her, apparently.
